‘Underground Comedian‘ is a phrase I coined to describe being a comedian who is new, alternative, and not famous.
And because I mostly perform in dark basements in rooms above pubs.

Bio

– Louie Christie
Audience’s mate Louie Christie does observational comedy which is offbeat and multi-layered. With an irreverent attitude he occasionally pushes the boundaries without being a prick.

– Pete Camp
Always ready to ask questions about why/how we do things.
My stand-up comedy style has been described as alternative, observational, and irreverent – by me.
”Insightful, considered, intelligent slice of life observations that are laugh out loud funny!”
– Audience member (unemployed), 2024
I’ve been described by others as as dry, multi-layered, and surreal…

| Alternative | “the alternative comedy scene, which challenged the cheap bigotry with which 1970s comedy was thoroughly raddled, and massively extended the possibilities of the stand-up format. Suddenly, instead of sticking to old gags which confirmed audience prejudices, comedians were allowed to be confrontational, wild, and absurd.” – Oliver Double, cited in foreword to Tony Allen. Attitude : Wanna Make Something of It? : The Secret of Stand-up Comedy. Glastonbury: Gothic Image, 2002. Print. |
| Observational | Not one-liners |
| Irreverent | Not reverent |
| Dry & multi-layered | Some jokes are hidden in plain sight. There are so many hidden easter egg jokes in this website, that even I can’t remember where they all are. Now only god knows. ↕ |
| Surreal | Basically I just stand on stage and tell people how I see the world. 🃏ⓔ For some reason, people find it funny. |

I see the world as equal parts exciting, mundane[VIP] and funny.
Funny weird, and funny “ha ha”.
Awards
I’ve never won a comedy competition, let alone entered one.
Except once by accident in Margate.
I didn’t win.
It was won by my arch nemesis, and ex-comedy-partner, “musical” comedian Boris Witzenfeld.

I have however, once, gatecrashed The British Comedy Awards masquerading as a member of the paparazzi:
I again faced my comedy nemesis Boris Witzenfeld in the underground comedy panel show about video games ‘Wheel Of Cheese’, but did I win? (spoiler: No)
To be honest I was always more into collaborating than competing anyway.
To me the comedy competition prizes always sounded like a crap deal. A thousand pounds if you win and zero if you don’t. Either way you give up your comedy performance in perpetuity throughout the universe to a corporation.
At least they haven’t tied down my work in parallel universes∞.
I found the solution. I’m going to invent the “comedy new act of the year collaboration” where everyone who enters gets a joke featured.
(If I get around to it.)
Using technology like a YouTube playlist so everyone keeps their share of the royalties.
(Probably also zero pounds.)

I’m an elusive beast, and catching one of my stand-up comedy gigs is a rare prize.
I’m actually founding member #16 of the The Bill Murray Comedy Club, and I’ve never even performed there.

But you’ll occasionally find me helping out round the corner though, at the show above the Camden Head pub.
The Camden Head pub in Islington, not, confusingly the Camden Head in Camden.
(Although I did used to live above the Camden Head in Camden. And performed there once. It’s also a comedy club. So if you turn up to the wrong Camden Head, you’ll probably see a nice show and probably won’t notice the difference.)
My comedy gigs are normally at ensemble nights that are:
- underground
- exclusive*
- questionable quality
- free to get in
I also entertain worldwide at European music festivals sometimes (behind the bar pulling pints) and I’m big in certain parts of the quilted multiverse.[1][2]
* they’ll normally let anyone in off the street
